Shaping the Port Coaming Block

March 1, 2020

Today's work was all about shaping and fitting the port coaming block.  With the installation (dry-fitting) of the new teak coaming board, I ended up with a rough 3/8" gap between the original port coaming block - they were in good enough condition to retain - and the cabin sides.  So to fill this gap, I laminated a few 1/8" thick sheets of teak, and then glued that to the original coaming block.  Today, I trimmed the surplus material around all four sides, making sure to cut the upper portion on the angle of the coaming block itself.

I then sanded all four sides of the coaming block and newly added material to ensure all surfaces were flush and in plane.

Moving the coaming block over to the boat, I went through an iterative process of sanding until I finally arrived at a good fit.  The varnish application to the coaming block and coaming board, as well as the cap for the coaming block (not shown), will allow for a more uniform appearance.

There is just a bit more work to be done on the coaming boards themselves, though not a lot to call this part of the refit complete.
